IntroductionThe Worcester County Continuum of Care, with the assistance of McKinney funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, currently provides funding to 15 different agencies in the region operating 22 programs providing services and or shelter through transitional or permanent housing facilities for homeless individuals and families in the county. The Worcester County Continuum of Care currently provides 378 units of housing and beds within programs with an additional 12 to come on line by the end of the year. We have developed a comprehensive system of care in the region which has providers of services and shelter actively engaged in remaining connected and improving our service delivery model to best meet the challenge of addressing homelessness in our individual communities in Worcester County and in developing a regional plan to reduce the occurrence of homelessness. The principal mission of the Continuum of Care Planning group is to provide programming that promotes increased economic independence, provides quality supportive services for many subpopulations among the homeless and to provide a safe, affordable housing for the long term stability in moving participants beyond homelessness. The Continuum of Care planning group works throughout the year to improve and plan for the best possible continuum of services to address the needs of the homeless within the county. The process culminates annually in an application for funding to HUD which in FY’ 2006 resulted in $4.9 million in funding for Worcester County.
